Design Engineer

Main Purpose

To secure work through the designs for ground improvement techniques ensuring that high quality, competitive proposals are delivered to the customer in a manner consistent with the business strategy and procedures.

Ensure that support is provided through the contract stage on all secured work and that safety is priorities above all other actions.

Key Accountabilities

  • Lead the technical bid process to ensure that tender deliverables are produced in a timely and effective manner. Oversee and/or interrogate design options and ‘value’ solutions, and if appropriate, identify the attractiveness of a project based on sound estimating principles. Activities to include the following:
  • Review tender documents (drawings, specifications, site investigation, and client requirements) and submission requirements, ensuring we evaluate all relevant information in the bid process.
  • Ensure that innovative solutions are produced (if necessary, liaise with the head of design team) and that all identified risks are mitigated.
  • Ensure that the correct methods, outputs and plant/resources are selected to deliver the solution, ensuring that all risks are mitigated.
  • Manage and coordinate the preparation of tender design.
  • Ensure effective communication with customers during and after the bid process to maximise our opportunities and to build long term relationships and encourage repeat work.
  • Provide considered responses to customer questions including post tender queries.
  • Ensure that the project operation and commercial teams have received an effective handover of bid documentation
  • Manage customer contact, present technical proposals to customers and contribute to customer meetings during the tender process
  • Ensure compliance with business strategy and authority levels
  • Support the delivery teams, verifying the work of others in a timely and efficient manner, and providing expert technical support, including visits to site and meetings with customers
  • On key bids oversee and lead the preparation, coordination and delivery of technical presentations to customers as required, to successfully secure orders
  • Co-ordination and management of input from consultants and specialist sub-contractors.
  • Maintain personal expertise and knowledge to ensure that ground engineering is at the forefront of the industry both technically and in using the latest technologies and standards
  • Exercise designer obligations of the Construction (Design and Management) regulations
  • Develop a culture of innovation and continuous improvement in bid winning
  • Form relationships with the customer or their representatives to develop clear understanding of their requirements
  • Produce preliminary design to support bids, along with presentations/reports as required
  • Assist estimators with design at tender and contract stages
  • Liaise with Engineers and Clients, take part in technical meetings with different stakeholders
  • Produce optimised detailed design to get approval from Clients and Engineers before start of the works
  • Ensure design/technical support throughout contract stage
  • Keep up to date with latest design development through webinars and conferences
  • Develop and implement a strategy to grow our relationships with key customers, to allow the growth in the company ground improvement techniques market.
  • Contact key customers and build relationships
  • Carry out visits to key customers to obtain feedback and provide presentations
  • Develop our marketing material including brochure and data sheets
  • Organise and attend corporate events
  • Support award entries

Personal Qualities and Experience

A masters degree in a relevant subject and membership of a relevant professional body (ICE, GeolSoc) and a valid CSCS card.

The role requires experience and exceptional technical/engineering knowledge of ground engineering processes, temporary works design and ground engineering and industry best practice. This individual will, therefore, be a subject matter expert with a good understanding in other areas in the engineering field. The individual will be both focussed and thorough and have the gravitas and professional credibility to advise senior management when something needs immediate redress together with the tenacity and drive to ensure that the necessary action is taken.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills are required, coupled with an ability to form effective relationships with partners and delivery team members under time pressure. Customer centric and flexible in approach, they will have the strategic and creative insight to understand the range of opportunities in invitations to tender and be willing to challenge the norm. The individual will know ‘what good looks like’ in bid submissions and work winning and have hands on experience of leading technical aspects of work-winning bids in a timely manner.

The individual should have a desire to continuously pursue innovation and development, with a focus on the customer and the ground engineering business.

Location: The role is based in either Burscough (Lancashire) or Camberley (Surrey). It is expected that an amount of travel to sites will be required as work demands. Occasional visits to other international Business Units may be required.
