Business Engineer/Estimator for Northern Region

Main Purpose

To develop, grow and maintain the business in the region by managing and co-ordinating all estimating and business development aspects of a bid, ensuring that value engineered, high quality, and competitive proposals are delivered to the customer in a manner consistent with the business strategy and procedures.

Key Accountabilities

  • Develop and implement a strategy to grow our relationships with key customers, to allow our growth in the ground improvement (Vibro Stone Columns, Vibro Compaction, Dynamic Compaction, Dynamic Replacement, CMC rigid inclusions, Prefabricated Vertical Drains, etc.) markets in the region.
  • Contact key customers and build relationships
  • Carry out visits to key customers to obtain feedback and provide presentations
  • Develop our marketing material including brochure and data sheets
  • Organise and attend corporate events
  • Support award entries
  • Lead the bid process to ensure that tender deliverables are produced in a timely and effective manner. Oversee and/or interrogate design options and ‘value’ solutions, and if appropriate, identify the attractiveness of a project based on sound estimating principles. Activities to include the following:
    • Review tender documents (drawings, specifications, site investigation, and client requirements) and submission requirements, ensuring we evaluate all relevant information in the bid process.
    • Ensure that innovative solutions are produced (if necessary liaise with the design team) and that all identified risks are mitigated.
    • Ensure that the correct methods, outputs and plant/resources are selected to deliver the solution, ensuring that all risks are mitigated.
    • Prepare tender price schedules and documents (including clear technical and financial proposals) in accordance with the pricing strategy and risk assessments. Ensure that cost plans are accurate and reflect the project requirements and risk profile.
    • Ensure effective communication with customers during and after the bid process to maximise our opportunities and to build long term relationships and encourage repeat work.
    • Provide considered responses to customer questions including post tender queries.
    • Ensure that the project operation and commercial teams have received an effective handover of bid documentation
    • Ensure feedback from commercial and operation team in relation to site production/results/payments/potential claims and assist/help them if necessary on solving issues
    • Manage customer contact, present tender proposals to customers and contribute to customer meetings during the tender process
    • Ensure compliance with business strategy and authority levels
  • Design
    • Value engineering focus on design (alternative solutions)
    • With the assistance of the Design Team, prepare the design documents (design reports and drawings) for simple projects
  • Ensure a relentless focus on safety – WORKSAFE HOMESAFE

Personal Qualities and Experience

The role requires a degree in a civil engineering or a geological subject and a valid CSCS card. Master degree desirable. Membership of a relevant professional body (ICE or GeolSoc) would be advantageous. Position open to graduates or experienced individuals.

Good technical/engineering knowledge of ground engineering processes is required. The individual will be both focussed and thorough and have the gravitas and professional credibility to advise senior management when something needs immediate redress together with the tenacity and drive to ensure that the necessary action is taken. This individual will, therefore, be a subject matter expert with a good understanding in other areas in the engineering field.

Good interpersonal and communication skills are required, coupled with an ability to form effective relationships with partners under time pressure. The individual will be customer centric in approach, with the ability to recognise potential opportunities in invitations to tender.

The individual should have a desire to continuously pursue innovation and development, with a focus on the customer and the ground engineering business.

Good Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) are necessary. Knowledge of Autocad would be advantageous.

Location: The role is based in Burscough, and it is expected that an amount of travel to sites will be required as work demands. Occasional visits to other international Business Units may be required.
